Kyle struggled to fight the emotions that threatened to contort his features. The elderly man meant nothing by it, he knew. It wasn't meant as an insult, but it felt like one. Like an iron bar to his stomach, stealing the wind from him. He forced a polite smile to his face. "My name is Kyle," he responded, stressing the name. The man's face didn't seem to pick up on this. Did he really have to spell it out? "How can I help you?"
The man pulled a face. "Isn't Ben around?"
Kyle frowned, and the man knew that he'd obviously hit a nerve, so he backtracked, "Not that I don't think you know what you're doing, love, I mean obviously you do... it's just this truck," he patted the hood with a firm, flat hand, "She's my baby, you know... and she can be difficult to handle." For a girl. This last bit was unspoken, but Kyle heard it loud as day through the man's silence.
